Pediatric Care

Happy Visits (Child under 3)

Did you know we can start seeing kids as early as 6 months old (or when they get their first tooth!)

Starting the habit of seeing a dentist at a young age makes a world of difference in how they do for visits as they get older. We try our best to make it a fun experience so they can leave with a balloon animal and a smile!

🦷 Preventive Care

This is the core of pediatric dental care and includes:

  • Cleanings and exams: Usually every 6 months to check for cavities, plaque buildup, and gum health.

  • Fluoride treatments: Strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities.

  • Dental sealants: Thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent decay.

  • Oral hygiene education: Teaching children and parents about brushing, flossing, and diet to maintain healthy teeth.

Monitoring Growth and Development

General dentists track how a child’s teeth and jaws are developing and may:

  • Monitor the eruption of baby and permanent teeth.

  • Check for bite alignment or orthodontic concerns.

  • Refer to an orthodontist if braces or other interventions are needed.

Managing Common Pediatric Dental Issues

General dentists can diagnose and treat:

  • Cavities (dental caries): Using fillings or crowns if necessary.

  • Gum disease: Managing gingivitis or early signs of periodontal disease.

  • Tooth injuries: Such as chips, fractures, or knocked-out teeth.

  • Thumb sucking or pacifier use: Advising on habits that may affect oral development.

4. Behavior Management

Since many children are anxious or fearful about dental visits, general dentists use:

  • Tell-show-do technique: Explaining and demonstrating procedures before performing them.

  • Positive reinforcement: Praising good behavior.

  • Distraction techniques: Videos, toys, or conversations to keep kids calm. *We have TVs on the ceilings in our rooms for the patient's entertainment. This helps tremendously for the littles!

Note: For children with high anxiety, special needs, or complex treatment needs, the Dr Mary may refer to a pediatric specialist or consider sedation options.

When Would a Referral to a Pediatric Dentist Be Made?

Dr Mary may refer a child to a pediatric dentist if:

  • The child is very young and uncooperative.

  • There are complex dental issues or developmental concerns.

  • The child has special healthcare needs.

  • Advanced behavior management or sedation is required.

Brush with us!

We know brushing the little ones teeth isn't always easy- but it helps to try to make it fun!
